Problem Statement
Our client has asked us to design a standing desk with a budget of $200 that can serve as an alternative to the conventional seated desk. Studies have shown that sedentary behavior for long periods of time cause, not only, health problems like obesity and musculoskeletal problems, but also issues with productivity.  A standing desk would aim to provide a solution to these major problems with features such as comfortability, pleasing aesthetics, durability, safety as well as adjustability of both the height and pitch of the desk, which would all be keys to the design.


Last Week's Goals

  • All-draw up CAD designs for design use and poster.
  • All- Make final decisions on materials to be used for both the desk top as well as the base.
  • All- Start ordering parts
  • All-Finish poster for poster day



Summary of Team Role Accomplishments
  • Leader Archer Jirasirikul - Led group in assimilation of new ideas and opinions from the reviewer (another lab instructor) into the design and discussion of potential candidate for the final design.
  • Communicator- Connor- will be in touch with the client with questions and reporting our progress. He also exploit his expertise in solid works to build a model of the design for the poster
  • Team – Brush up on the poster presentation and discuss and develop ideas for the final design of the standing desk.
Summary of Design Accomplishments

  • The poster was finished and printed.
  • The design of the standing desk is practically finalized except for the details of measurements and other calculations.
  • We have discussed and the majority of us are in favor of using the motorcycle jack due to a wider area of contact which will provide more stability
  • We decided to have a slide out portion for an extra work space for the table.


This Week's Goals/Individual Goals

  • All - Decide on the measurements of all parts of the table
  • All - Calculate the force that the design could hold
  • All - Choose materials for the desk top, base, and the mechanism for the desk top.
  • All - Estimate the cost of each parts and materials for the design
  • All - Start ordering parts
  • All - Start working on drawing out the detailed measurements or part required (E.g. numbers of pin, hinge, screws).


Project Difficulties

            It is hard to know what our actual machining abilities are going to be when it comes to building the designs that we have been drawing. It is also hard to estimate the cost of materials as there are some potentially usable materials left from prior projects.


Project Schedule

            We are on track according to the schedule that is in our project PowerPoint


Expenses


            We have yet to purchase anything; therefore, there are no expenses.

Here is the feedback from our friend over in Biomedical, Tracy Puccinelli, PhD.



Western Blot
  •  Sketches need to be more clear, Solidworks would help a lot here.
  • Costs need to be ironed out asap.
  • The Salt Shaker idea is pretty interesting, but needs to be fleshed out. How will it be machined? What will it be made of?
  • Team has lots of great ideas but needs better organization so that the project can move forward

Cooking Prep Table
  • Great design, well researched and well prepared presentation.
  • Talk to machine shop about drilling holes through knives, not sure if it is a viable idea.
  • Order materials right away. This has the potential to be a great project if it stays on track.

Standing Desk
  • Experimentation needs to be done on how each of the different adjustments (height, pitch) and other components interact with each other. Even if it is simply with cardboard.
  • Motorcycle jack might be too expensive, are there other options?
  • Final design decisions need to be made with an outline of costs.
  • Force calculations should be done in order to have a better idea of materials necessary.

  • Draw some semi-final designs
  • Do research on more of the science behind our project
  • Create presentation for poster day




Summary of Team Role Accomplishments

  • Leader Michael Petri- Led group in detailed potential final design drawings. Started to finalize which plans were going to become part of the final design.
  • Communicator- Connor- will be in touch with the client with questions and reporting our progress
  • Team- Put together the presentation for poster day and drew up future plans



Summary of Design Accomplishments

  • The presentation for poster day was created and mostly finalized.
  • The brainstorming list was practically finallized and we opened up more categories when it came to materials so we could make more educated decisions.
  • We are leaning towards using car jacks in our design, and discovered a potential new idea of a motorcycle jack
  • We determined which pitch adjustment would work the best

Welcome to the Intro to Engineering Design Lab 303!



Welcome to the InterEGR 160 Design Lab 303, where freshmen students from the College of Engineering of UW-Madison work in teams on a design project for real-world clients. 




Project 1: Design of Mobile Cooking Station
Problem Statement
The United Cerebral Palsy of the Greater Dane County (UCP) would like a way to involve the adults with disabilities in their cooking skills class to have more independence in the cooking process. Our goal is to design a semi-mobile cart that allows for easier food preparation, through multiple features to assist these students with disabilities with the cooking process. We would like to be able to make the cart usable for a wide range of people.

Project 3: Design of a Western Blot Apparatus
Problem Statement
Joe Walker performs western blotting to analyze the results of gel electrophoresis with proteins. Currently, the process is done completely by hand and is very time consuming, often occupying much of a day to complete.  Automated machines can cost between $5,000 and $10,000, making them unavailable for most small labs.  Our goal is to develop a fully automated – or at least partially automated – system to perform western blotting so lab workers are able to perform other tasks.
